Magnesite occurs as veins in and an alteration product of ultramafic rocks, serpentinite and other magnesium rich rock types in both contact and regional metamorphic terrains.

The craton is primarily composed of approximately 2.8 billion year old ( ~ 2.8 Ga ) granite-gneiss metamorphic terrain ( the Southwestern Province and Western Gneiss Belt ), and three granite-metamorphic Murchison Provinces ).
